The Use of Word Count

Here at Website Content Providers, we charge by word count or at least use it to make estimates. It is the best way to assure that neither the freelance writers nor the buyers of freelance writing services get ripped off.

Let me explain…

Disappointed When I first started out in freelance writing, I would bid on projects from Elance by the page. It worked out for awhile, but then I got several customers with “special requests” that increased the number of words; however, they expected me to stick with my original bid.

It didn’t take long for me to learn that it is best to estimate the cost of a project by word count. It is more convenient to bid by the page; however, a decrease in margins, requests to single space instead of double space or to use 1.5” spacing can double the work.

It is also best for the buyer…

Why? I didn’t figure this out right away. I came to the conclusion that it is best for the buyer to pay by the word when I outsourced writing projects to other freelance writers.

There are so many writers that use fluff, decrease the margins and double space the content, and use huge spaces between headlines and text just to take up space and meet their page count. Also, if you expect to have photos or graphics inserted, I don’t believe that it should count toward the page count that you are paying for.

This is the best advice I can provide to buyers of content…

Positive Relationship If you are paying for someone else to write website content, eBooks or you are paying for article writing, insist on a rate per word rather than a page count. It makes the outcome more determinable with less conflict and you will be less likely to get ripped off by a writer who “fluffs” the project.

If you want to work with an experienced writer who is fair…

…feel free to inquire about our services. We are dedicated to providing high-quality writing services at a fair price to help other entrepreneurs be successful.
