What eBook Format is Best for Online Reading?
Online reading can be tough for people with vision problems as well as for people who use the computer a lot. Believe it or not, there is a condition that is called “computer vision syndrome” which is a form of severe eye strain caused from staring at a computer screen for long periods of time.
This type of eye strain can cause sensitivity to light, blurred vision, difficulty with focusing, fatigue, and headaches, as well as irritation due to dry eyes. Thank goodness, it is a temporary condition and studies have found that it doesn’t cause permanent damage.
I recently went to the eye doctor and he was considering prescribing me bifocals; however, he decided that it would be a good idea for me to use “computer glasses” since I spend so much time on the computer. After I saw the bill for a regular set of glasses, I decided against purchasing an extra pair, at least for now.
There isn’t a proper or an improper format for eBooks…
When I first started writing eBooks, there was a lot of small business information published that said that eBooks should be double-spaced because it is more comfortable for online reading. Now, if you are submitting manuscripts to publishers, many of them require double-spaced text in order to leave room for proofreading marks; however, if you are self-publishing, you can choose your own spacing and font size.
When working with a
ghost writer
be sure to discuss the format that you desire. A lot of ghost writers charge by the page when writing eBooks. I used to; however, it lead to some misunderstandings. Now, I charge by the
word count
which enables the client to choose whether they want double-spacing, 1.5 spacing or single spacing. They can also choose the size of the margins and the fonts. Regardless of special requests, the price stays the same. Good-bye to misunderstandings!
As an eBook publisher…
I think that it is responsible to consider the ease of reading your eBook online. Therefore, I recommend either double-spacing or 1.5 spacing. Most of my clients prefer 1.5 spacing. I usually use a 12-point font unless the client requests a different size.
Smaller fonts are harder to read and if your target market is over 40 years old, I suggest using a bigger font. Presbyopia is natural condition of aging that affects vision with symptoms such as difficulty reading fine print as well as eyestrain. Such symptoms usually start to appear between the ages of 40 to 50.
So, when choosing the format for your eBook, take into consideration both your own preference and the characteristics of your target market. Here at Website Content Providers, we strive to please our clients. We offer concise writing that is interesting and informative in any format that you choose.
