Two Vital Steps to Take Before You Make Website for Online Sales

If you are interested in selling over the internet, you probably already have a "to-do" list that looks something like this:

  1. Make website
  2. Set-up payment option
  3. Advertise

If you are like most of the newcomers that try to open a business on the internet, you probably think that the money will start rolling in at that point.

I can tell you from experience, it won't.

In traditional business, advertising is pretty much the key to get business after you set up the store. When people hear about your business, they start coming in, even if only to satisfy their curiosity. You are standing there to greet them, offer them a smile and help them to understand your products or services. When doing business on the internet, pretty much everything is different.

There are a couple of steps that need to be completed before you start to make website decisions. Following these tips will save you time and money on your start-up and you won't end up starting over…

  • Do Research
  • On the internet, marketing research will help; however, that is not enough. You will need to know the keywords that people use when they are looking for your products or services online. You will need to evaluate the keywords and find which ones are high in demand and fairly low in supply. You can do this by doing keyword research . The keywords that you find might even help you to name your business and select your domain.

  • Develop Content
  • Most people forget this step or do it after their website is launched. Content is very important for four reasons:

      1) It contains keywords that will help to optimize the website for the search engines

      2) It builds credibility for you with your website visitors

      3) It keeps people on your site longer which can also help with search engine optimization

      4) It makes your website more desirable so that other website owners will voluntarily link to you, which also helps with search engine optimization

    Why does it matter if I do research before I make the website?

    Research is the most important thing that you can do for your online business. Just about everything that happens on the internet is keyword-driven. When making a website, you will input your chosen keywords into meta tags, your title and description of each page. If you haven't already done the research, you will do a lot of back-tracking. Choice of keywords also affects your advertising costs if you intend to advertise through pay-per-click services.

    The main reason that you want to do the research first is to determine a niche in the market – one with sufficient demand and not too much competition. It is wise to choose a domain name that uses your primary keyword. The keywords will also be used in your content to help further with search engine optimization.

    Why should I develop the content second?

    This is a matter of opinion and choice; however, I recommend developing your content first because your website will be practically useless without it. Once you buy a domain, make the website and launch it, you will be paying hosting fees for a "store" that really isn't ready and the clock is ticking.

    It can take a long time to develop your content unless you hire a web writer to crack out your online copywriting for you. During this time, your website isn't really doing anything and you are paying for hosting and getting closer to your domain expiration.

    After you have done your research and prepared your content, you are ready to make the website, launch it and start marketing it. It is so much easier to get your website right the first time and open an online business that is ready to make money.
