Instructions for building a content-driven website the hard way...

To develop the website, there is a quite a bit of planning involved. You start out with keyword research using a tool such as the Google AdWords Keyword Tool or WordTracker . You review the results to identify a main keyword that is in demand, but not highly competitive. If possible, use this keyword in your domain name. The other keywords that appear in the research are all related to your theme. Sort through them and identify a number of good keywords to use on your website.

Next, you form a three-tier plan for your content using the keywords. The first tier will be your homepage and the keyword for that tier should be your main keyword that represents your theme or your niche. The second tier will be your navigation buttons with introduction pages. The third tier is strictly content that contains keywords related to your second-tier pages. Your primary objective at this stage is to provide valuable information to your website visitors. Don't worry about "About Us", "Services", "Products", etc. That will all come after the useful content is developed. A good start-up plan will include at least five buttons and about 30 informative pages.

After you have completed your three-tier plan, it is time to develop titles, descriptions, secondary keywords, and headlines for articles that will be written for each page. If you intend to hire a web writer to develop the content, it is a good time to find one and get them involved in the project.

Once your plan is completely developed, you can forward the plan to your web designer or developer and to your web writer. The designer can use it as a site map for developing your website and the writer will use it to develop the content. After the content is developed, the designer can upload the pages or you can do it yourself.

After your website is launched, you will continue to add fresh content at least weekly to maintain the momentum. You will also concentrate on getting incoming links from directories, participating in forums, article marketing, exchanging links, and so forth.

What do the search engines think about content driven websites?

The search engines actually love them! It is their goal to provide useful, keyword-related websites for their users. They are impressed by websites that contain quality information and grow overtime by adding fresh content. A well-developed content website has a better chance of getting top listings in the search engines which means improved traffic at no cost.

How does a content driven website impress visitors?

Most people who browse the internet are looking for information or they are price shopping. If you provide useful information on your website, they will love your website. They will probably bookmark it, join up to receive your newsletter, subscribe to your RSS feed, review your products and services, or buy from you. Quality content that is useful to visitors actually improves your credibility and it can improve your conversion rate. If developed using keywords properly, it can attract more traffic through the search engines.
